It’s been a goal of mine to incorporate my Japanese language abilities and third culture experience into my creative career for as long as I can remember.
When I was pursuing engineering I always made it a point to intern and study in Japan. I conducted humanoid robotics research with the leading Humanoid Roboticist in the world with Prof. Hiroshi Ishiguro at Osaka University. I interned at Fujitsu in Kanagawa. I interned at and even up until the moment I switched to being a full-time creative I was recruited to work on Japanese technology globalization in Tokyo.
Last month I made a huge step in combining my two passions! I was cast as the lead in a Japanese-language short film called ‘SISTERS’ in which I play a third culture kid torn between her American culture and the Japanese step-family she decides to leave behind. She’s confronted with her feelings of never belonging when her estranged Japanese step-sister urges her to reconnect with her past.
My dialogue was 90% Japanese and one of the most challenging parts was working to speak like a true Tokyoite. I lived in the western part of Japan, specifically Nara for a good portion of my time in Japan and so I have a country 田舎 accent that sometimes comes out hahaha. Thanks to the great team and my co-star for helping turn this country girl into a city girl :)
